Some Keystone Region History
Throughout 1995 and 1996, a number of PCA members in the Centre, Clinton, and Lycoming County areas, for a variety of reasons, decided to investigate the possibility of forming a new PCA region to serve PCA members in the central part of Pennsylvania. Shortly after the 1996 national Porsche Parade (Sept. 1996 in Oklahoma), a small but active group of PCAers gathered in the alcove just off the “Whiskers” lounge in the Nittany Lion Inn in State College for what turned out to be Keystone’s first pre-organizational meeting. PCAers present at that meeting on October 27, 1996 were: Bill and Sally Bowman, Craig Eastwood, Joe and Helen Fahy, Bill Sacks, Bill Simon III, Dan and Betsy Swearingen, Eric Swendrowski and Karon Jackson, and potential member Dave Neufer. At that auspicious moment, we unanimously decided that we needed to be a separate region.
Following some initial correspondence and phone calls by Bill Simon to the PCA National Office and Zone 2 Representative Chuck Drake, the initial group met again on December 15, 1996. At that second meeting, they were joined by PCAers Mike Hartman, Barry King, Shirley Sacks, and Murray Schoenholtz, plus potential member Doug Stewart. At that second, more official meeting, we agreed on the name “Keystone” for the region, and elected the first slate of officers for the provisional region: President Bill Simon III; Vice President Joe Fahy; Secretary Craig Eastwood; and Treasurer Bill Sacks. Other issues discussed included counties in northern and central Pennsylvania to be in the new region, acquisition of a post office box, generation (by donation, led off by Murray Schoenholtz) of an initial working treasury, and production of a newsletter.
Additional correspondence with Zone 2 Representative Drake, the PCA National Office, and PCA National Secretary Bob Miller, and all our neighboring regions, plus monthly meetings each month all throughout central Pennsylvania, ensued. After what, at that time, seemed like an interminable amount of paperwork, we officially submitted our Petition for Charter (including Constitution, ByLaws, and membership list) to PCA National on 16 May 1997. One month and two days later, on 18 June 1997, during the 1997 Porsche Parade in San Antonio, the PCA National Executive Council called Bill Simon to their meeting and officially “blessed us” and welcomed Keystone Region to the national organization.
