It's Not Just the Cars...It's the People!

February 2025 : Dan Crust

I guess I was born to be a car guy.  Unlike many, I didn’t grow up in a car enthusiast family, but it came to me somehow.  In my misspent youth I fell in with like-minded friends and terrorized the high school parking lots.  In those days American muscle filled the need, although I always admired sports cars and racing as well.  Even before I had my driver’s license a locally owned 930 was one of the dream cars crossing the landscape.

My first car in high school was a 1970 Mercury Cougar (mostly bondo) and when I came home from the army I found another, better one which I still own today.  In the mid-80’s I began autocrossing and daily driving a first generation Volkswagen GTI, and also acquired an early Porsche 924.  Then-current 911’s were what I really loved, but were unattainable for me at that time of life.  Raising a family paused some car related activities, but in 2007 I found my dream car at a local car show.  Randy Kilmer’s 1985 Carrera was there with a piece of notebook paper stuck under the windshield wiper: “For Sale”.  Keystone member, Bill Simon came over to encourage me about the quality of Randy’s car and four days later, with the blessing of my long suffering wife Anita, the car was mine.  Randy had already purchased another Carrera, and encouraged me to join the Porsche Club.  He would go on to be a great friend and I would make more friends in the club as well.  I’ve even become a perennial member of the leadership team of Keystone Region.

The nascent interest in cars and motorsport of our then nine year old youngest daughter was fired by the people in the club and led to her now being in leadership roles at the region and national level.  We have also attended 11 F1 races and many other races from dirt tracks to NHRA, IMSA, and Indycar.  Maybe it’s genetic.

A few years after getting the 911 I renewed my somewhat unhealthy relationship with water-cooled front engine Porsches by picking up a 944.  In 2017 a low mileage first generation Boxster S joined the stable, followed the next year by a Macan.

I can attest to the truth of the Porsche Club’s slogan: It’s really is the people.  I have had innumerable great experiences with many folks through club activities and built enduring friendships as well.  It has even provided a framework for ongoing activities with my daughter, sharing a passion for Porsches and for the fellowship of like-minded enthusiasts.
